Hi Parents!
Happy Friday! I hope everyone has had a great week!! This has been another amazing week in kindergarten! Here is a peek at next week: Things to Remember for next week: Valentine’s Day Exchange February 11th: Please send in a decorated box to exchange Valentine’s by February 8th! The county is not allowing us to do candy this year…. Only cards. Please make sure that student Valentine’s only contain cards. NO CANDY or FOOD! Thank you! I have attached the class list to this email. We will be going to the library Monday! Please send in your student’s book so they can check out a new one. Please remember to send in a snack with your student packed separately from their lunches! Many students are eating their snacks during lunch and they do not have a snack for the afternoon. Thank you!! Math Next week in math, we will continue our new unit on Measurement! We have now learned about length, height, weight, and capacity! Our favorite song is “When a cup fills up!” and have enjoyed comparing different containers and talking about which holds more/less. In kindergarten, we use non-standard units of measure. This means that we will be using manipulatives like connecting cubes, crayons, paper clips, and counting bears to measure objects. We will be learning special words to compare objects like: Length: Longer or Shorter Height: Taller or Shorter Weight: Heavier or Lighter Capacity: Holds more or Holds Less Here are our standards for this unit: MGSEK.MD.1 Describe several measurable attributes of an object, such as length or weight. For example, a student may describe a shoe as, “This shoe is heavy! It is also really long!” MGSEK.MD.2 Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter. Measure lengths indirectly and by iterating length units. MGSE1.MD.1 Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object. MGSE1.MD.2 Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps. (Iteration) Classify objects and count the number of objects in each category. MGSEK.MD.3 Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count. Represent and interpret data. MGSE1.MD.4 Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another. Reading This week we continued Unit 4- Bigger Books, Bigger Reading Muscles! We talked about books that we are comfortable with, and books that we have to use our “bigger muscles” to read! These books we will need to use our reading strategies more and will not always have a pattern! We will continue to work in guided reading groups and students will work on building their reading stamina independently and work on iReady. Review: Super Powers: Pointer Power, Reread Power, Partner Power, Picture Power, Snap Word Power, Sound Power, Persistence Power. Please have your student work on iready at home! Our goal is 45 minutes for reading and 45 minutes for math a week! Thank you!! Writing In writer’s workshop, we will be starting our new unit on Informational Writing. We will be learning how to make “teaching books” and write step by step directions to teach about something we know. ELAGSEKW2: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic. Social Studies In Social Studies we will be continuing our new IB Unit: How the world works. We will be talking about rocks and minerals and using our five senses to observe them! SKE2. Students will describe the physical attributes of rocks and soils. a. Use senses to observe and group rocks by physical attributes such as large/small, heavy/light, smooth/rough, dark/light, etc. b. Use senses to observe soils by physical attributes such as smell, texture, color, particle/grain size. c. Recognize earth materials— soil, rocks, water, air, etc. Here is our new IB Unit! IB Unit 4: How the World Works Transdisciplinary theme: An interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies. Central Idea: Senses help us investigate our world. Lines of Inquiry: The way things move and the reasons why (form/reflection) The effects of gravity (reflection) Patterns and how they affect construction (causation) Using the senses to describe and group objects by observable properties (causation) Earth’s materials and natural resources (form) Key Concepts: Reflection, Form, Causation Related Concepts: Evidence, Reason, Operations, Impact Learner Profile: Risk Taker, Inquirers, Knowledgeable Attitudes: Curiosity, Cooperation Transdisciplinary Skills: Thinking: evaluation, application, analysis Social: cooperation, group decision making Communication: all Self-Management: fine motor skills, safety, gross motor Phonics In Phonics –We will also continue to review all previously taught letter and sounds. Please review C, A, O, D, G, M, L, H, T, I , J, K, P, B, U, R, F, E, S, N, W, Y, V, X, Z, Q and the “Ch” ,“Sh”, “Th” “Wh” “Ph” sound with your child. We have also finished our first sight word list! I am attaching the first list AND the second to this email! We are starting on the second list Monday! Our new sight words will be: pretty, saw, who. Please review the first list and the words: all, eat, good, what, yes, must. As always, please let me know if you have any questions! I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!!

We thought about books that we really love and would like to see more of. Students then used sight words to build sentences like: “Here is the _______” and “Look at me ______”. They used these sentences to tell about things they love! This week, students worked to add two sentences and write endings for their books! ELAGSEKW2: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic. Social Studies In Social Studies we will be continuing our next IB Unit: Who We Are. We will continue this unit by talking about gratitude and discussing what we are thankful for. In the five school days leading up to the week of Thanksgiving, we will share our gratitude for many things that people often take for granted, or fail to stop and appreciate. Here is a list of standards that we will be covering: SSKH1 The student will identify the purpose of national holidays and describe the people or events celebrated. c. Veterans Day d. Thanksgiving Day SSKH2 The student will identify important American symbols and explain their meaning. a. The national and state flags (United States and Georgia flags) b. The bald eagle c. The Statue of Liberty d. Lincoln Memorial e. Washington Monument f. White House g. Pledge of Allegiance h. Star Spangled Banner SSKCG2 The student will retell stories that illustrate positive character traits and will explain how the people in the stories show the qualities of honesty, patriotism, loyalty, courtesy, respect, truth, pride, self-control, moderation, and accomplishment. Phonics In Phonics – We will review all previously taught letter and sounds and focus on the letter “ X” “ Z” . Please review C, A, O, D, G, M, L, H, T, I , J, K, P, B, U, R, F, E, S, N, W, Y, V and the “Ch” ,“Sh”, “Th” “Wh” sound with your child. As always, please let me know if you have any questions!
